Why I LOVE being a

Marine Biology Ph.D. Candidate (while coding!)

Xochitl shares what she LOVES most about being a marine biologist.

In this “play with me” twist, check out Xochitl’s coding homework while she shares her favorite parts of being a Marine Biologist.

Xochitl Clare, Marine Biologist, isn’t a coder, she is facing her fears to learn coding for population modeling!

For her, Marine Biology is more than a job. Before she became a professional Marine Biologist and Ph.D. candidate, she dedicated time to helping out, volunteering, and many long hours to the field–but loves what she does. Let’s find out why:

What does she love most about being a Marine Biologist?

Xochitl: I love that I am always learning something new! In this class, we are learning how to apply mathematical models and numbers to ecological systems. (She is learning how to take data and translate it into a plot.)

You might expect to hear about fish and diving–but what I LOVE most about marine biology is… the people!

Marine biology has connected me with phenomenal people and learning about what brings us together. What brings us together as creatures living in this environment. And it is those people who have helped me get where I am today.

So, when I look back one day… When I’m not able to dive, and I’m not able to go out into the field, I think I will remember the people most.

How is coding helping her as a Marine Biologist?

As a Ph.D. Candidate and Ecologist working for her university (Remember: many grad and postdoc science students get paid by their schools!), she’s super used to thinking about animals. However, numbers not as much. She’s not a mathematical modeling Ecologist by trade. So, in her coding class she’s learning how to take data, for instance on a population of microbes and how much they grow per day, and translate all of that into a plot.

Once she finishes the homework she’s walking through in the video, she’ll have a much better sense of that 😊

So, keep an eye out for more from Xochitl coming up as she’ll be sharing not only her amazing adventures as a Marine Biologist, but also a performing artist!
