Misconceptions
Real Scientists Tell All!
Meet our team of professional scientists, jumping in to speak directly to the public, unfiltered, on video. In fact, the beginning of the above video is a quick wave, hello, and a intro into what they do. So, what brought these scientists together from different countries and scientific backgrounds?
Shattering misconceptions about science
The goal, take scientists off a pedestal.
Scientists are people too. They’re not robots. They don’t live in ivory towers. They don’t think they’re better than you. We want you to understand science is for EVERYONE. As a kid, our now professional scientists would have loved to have a resource like SciAll.org. showcasing that anyone can be a scientist. There is no particular mold.
We want to bridge the trust gap between science and the public. We want to bridge what most people know about science, and what scientists wish people knew about science. Interfacing scientists with the public is really important for getting the public excited about the work that they do!
We hope that you’ll be able to find some information, resources, excitement, and inspiration in what our scientists are sharing.
We want to share our stories. We love talking about science (and our family and friends can only listen to us for so long 😊)
What type of science do they do?
All kinds of science! Their professional titles include:
- Marine Ecologist
- Sea Turtle Biologist
- Neotropical Pollination Biologist
- Chemical Oceanographer
- Organic Geochemist
- Solar and Space Physicist
- Marine Biologist
- Nuclear Physicist
- Behavioral Ecologist
- Astrophysicist
- Coral Reef Ecologist
- Mammologist & Parasitologist
So, that’s an impressive list… but what are they actually doing?
Dr. Joe Pfaller, Sea Turtle Biologist, is in the field studying sea turtles! He’s patrolling the beach looking for nesting female sea turtles (and getting eaten by bugs).
Rossana Maguiña, Neotropical Pollination Biologist, spends a lot of time in the Rainforest staring at flowers and waiting for pollinators to come visit them (while being annoyed by mosquitos).
Dr. Alex Jentsch, Nuclear Physicist at Brookhaven National Laboratory, is literally smashing atomic nuclei together in particle accelerators at almost the speed of light.
Dr. Katlin Bowman, Chemical Oceanographer, studies marine pollution. She’s looking at microplastics and mercury, and how they effect marine ecosystems.
Dr. Miho Janvier, Solar & Space Physicist, chases solar storms in space.
Dr. Beth Lenz, Coral Biologist, studies corals which are beautiful animals, and currently under a lot of stress.
Dr. Kat Beheshti, Marine Ecologist, works in muddy salt marsh and seagrass beds.
Amelia Munson, Behavioral Ecologist, studies fish and how their experiences make them who they are.
Dr. Burçin Mutlu-Pakdil, Astrophysicist, studies galaxies. She uses big telescopes to search for the most mysterious objects in space.
