Despite what you’ve heard, becoming a scientist does not mean you will morph into an old, white guy.
Here’s a secret worth spreading: scientists come in all shapes and sizes, and you need not be an old white dude to be a scientist. It’s true that historically, it was a privilege (for those with money) to have access to the education needed to pursue a science career, but we’re moving beyond those days in many parts of the world (particularly industrialized nations). In fact, diversity in science (and in STEM fields in general) is a real asset because of the innovation that arises from brining diverse perspectives to the science table. So, if you think scientists fit a mold (that you may not fit, maybe because you’re from a group under-represented in the sciences), think again!
