Misconception: Marine

Biologists All Study Whales & Dolphins

Whales and dolphins? Amazing! Playing with them all day? Sadly, not part of my job description…

Many believe that all marine biologists study whales and dolphins for a living and have the luxury of playing with or even training these animals all day. Let’s be clear, studying whales and dolphins IS an option when you’re a marine biologist. However, most of us study other forms of the VAST assemblage of life under the sea. Whales and dolphins are, no doubt, vital components of marine ecosystems – and well worth studying. But it takes a lot more than cetaceans for an ecosystem to thrive, which is why we’ve got to study sooo much more!
