#1 Tip for Applying to Grad School in Science

Applying to grad school can be intemidating. How do you apply? When do you apply? How can you ensure success? This will be your life. Take the time to make the right choice for your future.

Our amazing scientist share their #1 insider tips when it comes to applying to grad school.

Rosssana Maguina, M.S. Pollination Biologist: Give yourself enough time to research programs that will meet your goals and expectations, while leaving time to make a strong application.

Dr. Joe Pfaller, Sea Turtle Biologist: Follow your heart. Think deep on the place, topic and advisor you will be investing your life in.

Dr. Sammy Davis, Ecologist & Science Educator: Talk and meet people! Before you ever apply talk to teachers, your potential advisors, students, understand what the program, people, and projects are like.

Dr. Jenan Kharbush, Chemical Oceanographer/ Microbial Biogeochemist: Make connections and reach out to the programs and advisors in advance. That way they get to know you and your interests before they get your application. This is a great time for them to be able to help guide you through possible funding opportunities.

Dr. Alex Jentsch, Nuclear Physicist: Contact the person you want to work with before you ever apply! That first contact is important. Why do you want to work with them? What are your goals? Creating that connection can be key to getting your application to the top of the pile.

Adrian Perez, Social Insect Biologist, Ph.D. Candidate: Recommendations matter! Have strong letters of recommendation. They can help you stand out from other candidates. So take time to build those connections with people you work with along the way.

Dr. Mike Gil, Marine Biologist: Do your homework–make sure you understand the research program you are interested in. Show them why you care about and are interested in THAT program over all the others.

Amelia Munson, Behavioral Ecologist, Ph.D. Candidate: Interview them as much as they interview you. It’s all about finding the right match for both sides- so bring those hard questions!

Good luck!
